"In 2000, artists Philippe Parreno and Pierre Huyghe bought the copyright to the Japanese cartoon character AnnLee in order to use her in their art, and then invited a number of peer artists to do the same. Two years later, they transferred these rights to an independent AnnLee Association in an attempt to prevent any further use of the cartoon character`s image. By defiantly reinserting AnnLee surreptitiously into a museum context, Mircea Cantor refutes the notion that the meaning of images can be exhausted by their ownership."
