Urban Apocalypse in Manchester!

Having previously attacked Manchester with a mega tsunami in an aimless Photoshop doodle session, this calamitous sketch was also created in the name of experimentation. It depicts my favourite northern city embroiled in a rather nasty little nuclear conflict. The original panorama shot was taken at dawn from a favourite old photographic location atop a multi-storey car park close to the Arndale Centre. This is a high resolution image, so check it out in full size if your monitor can handle it!

The age of the atom began deep in the darkness of the New Mexico desert on July 16th, 1945, with the detonation of what was known only as "The Gadget". It was a plutonium-based device developed by the scientists working on the Manhattan Project, spurred by fears that Nazi Germany could unlock the apocalyptic puzzle before the western powers. In reality, the top brass of the American military received intelligence during the later stages of WWII that German officials had decided to abandon nuclear research in favour of projects that yielded results within six months. The decision was made, however, not to share this detail with the Manhattan team in case they lost some of their motivation to deliver the weapon.

Throughout their dark and ominous history, nuclear weapons have been detonated on over two thousand occasions for testing and demonstration purposes. With regard to actual warfare, only two nuclear weapons have been detonated offensively - both of them by the United States of America; deployed on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. So it is with a somewhat tainted but entirely commendable gesture that America, under the leadership of Barack Obama, has finally announced a deal with Russia to significantly reduce their nuclear weapons stocks. However, the deal still allows both sides to possess an arsenal of 1,550 warheads, which is comfortably enough to eradicate civilisation as we know it. Thankfully, the great super-powers have matured beyond the paranoid mentalities of the cold war and we are unlikely to see any of the full scale radioactive hostilities which at one time seemed worryingly plausible. Nuclear power can be a powerful force for good as well as evil - indeed, it has the potential to save billions of lives by becoming our primary power source as the remaining fossil fuel resources begin their slow but inevitable decline.

Trying out some new Topaz filters just bought from the PMA 2011 Photo show in Sydney. This one is Simplify that achieves a nice rotoscoping (cartoon'ifying) effect.
