Active Assignment Weekly March 21-28: The Diptych

The Diptych: If an image speaks a thousand words, then can two or more be better than one? The concept of using multiple images is not new and has been used for centuries, first in religious works, to tell a story across a number of pictorial panels. These triptychs were often even made pocket-size, as icons, for people to carry with them as permanent reminders of the god or gods to whom they devoted their lives and their prayers. The use of multiple images in Japanese culture is well known, not only across screens or panels in dwellings, but also as folded, pull-out stories which evolved into what we know as manga and cartoon-strips today

The Assignment: To create a single image using two photos (The Diptych) that fit better together than they did apart. A mini story in two frames; an association, siblings, parent & child, different perspectives on the same theme, anything that works well as a team of two. Get creative and think in pairs.

Restriction: Must be only two photos – no triptychs.

Dare: Process or shoot the diptych as a black and white photo (sepia or other toning is okay).

WIT: This assignment was a lot harder than it sounded. Several attempts that didn't feel right, this one seemed to work the best. The left side is a dried up old leaf near a crack in the garage floor. The right image is a piece of ornamental vine from a floral arrangement and was shot against a white poster board; a subtle texture layer was added later. Both images were combined and then converted to B&W at the same time.
