I made a mistake. By using my dad's camera (I left mine at work), I can only come up a bearly ok shot (meanly for the poor perfromance on the contrast at dark area.) Anyway, in those 10 photos I added pacifier as a new prop, which I think fit her hollowed eye expression well. Plus, Japanese anime has a thing about pacifier and character from under world (hell) , I think that's because it makes strong contrast on the charector.

they made detail introductions on figures not yet on the market.

It's about time for me to think about how to marker merona's face as I please. on the tittle I was saying facial improvement, but actually, her face is great in her own ways therefore no improvement is needed.
unlike Echidna, Merona's face has achieved her creater's own perfection (the model sculpter), and now it's time for me to achieve mine on Merona, and it will be my own version of it.

Here we see 3 photos, on the left is original face, at the middle, we can see normally my own skinning bear version of Merona. On the right, is how I tried to expanding her characteristic by adding unusual eyelashes.

One special thing about her eyes is her cross-shaped pupil, it remind me of circus and freak show, but I want to give her some magical, super natural feels and gorgeous gipsy female magician with extoic make-up (at least to Asians....) and all that out look. Plus she can have creams shoot out from her body, this character design actually goes perfectly well of the style that I wish to turn her into.

So, I decide to go bit extreme for her lower eyelashes, it's like a circus make-up and to fit the curve of her body and skirt, I go with round, petal like shape eyelash. I have no idea how I can actually draw that with Gundam marker, but it's always interesting to think about the possibilities.....

Richard Dawkins must be a superhero. It's the only way to explain how he combats questions from those who use a single answer to explain away the many mysteries of the world around us.

I guess you'll have to view this large to make any sense of it.
I was actually asked that question at a review session the other day.
I didn't know people still did that.

I woke up this morning at 04:00 and withing thirty seconds realised that I was not going back to sleep without a Valium. Too late for a Valium. 03:00 is okay, but if I take one any later than that and I'll feel even sillier than usual for the first couple of hours in the morning at the office. Sometimes that a good thing, but I'm going to be a little too busy for day-tripping, as it is Friday. Mondays and Fridays . . . what can I say.

Since it was that time of the day when work seems intolerable, I decided to play. One of my favourite games is Make Something Into Something Else. You've seen this mama Canada Goose here before. I know, I know, some of you think of them as vermin, but I don't have to live with them crapping all over the place, so I can think of them as cute:

They nest in the most peculiar places.

This image was a good candidate for art because it's pretty simple. All I had to do was get rid of the cement block wall and punch up the colours with a few clicks and pretso-changeo, I've got art: If I had some more time, I'd find a nice woodland scene and paste it in the background. Maybe another day.

Here's a canoe that you've also seen here before: Again, a good subject because it's simple. The waves rolling in from a passing boat also give the image depth and a vanishing point at the horizon - a perfect starting point for art.

I first tried the Photoshop Poster Edges filter: You'll have to click all of these images to enlarge them to see the full effects. This one is interesting, but it is not what I'm looking for. The waves have taken over the image now and the canoe detail is lost in the filter effect.

The Watercolour filter is more of what I'm looking for: The waves are still there, doing their compositional job, but now the canoe is much more interesting, as is the water. The Watercolour filter is one of my favourites, but it's tricky and doesn't work at all for some images.

Here's another image you've seen here before and it too is simple: Cute little varmint, eh?

On the little Chipmunk, the Watercolour filter worked a treat: The only problem is that his teensy feet were lost in his shadow, so I had to fake them. They don't look like Chipmunk feet to me either, so don't bother to tell me.

Here is a nice, pensive shot of Carol Dover which you have also seen here before: Simple and poignant.

I first tried a weird filter called Smudge Stick. I don't like the sound of it, but it does sometimes yield interesting results: However, in this case, Smudge Stick is not my weapon of choice.

Call me Crazy (please), but I've always imagined writing comic books - not the kid's stuff. I have a sort of comic book brain; you wouldn't believe what goes on in there. Walter Mitty was brain dead compared to me. The problem is producing the art; the stories will take care of themselves. I've been working on some techniques for turning photos into comic strip illustrations. There are tons of products and lessons on the web for doing this and I've tried a lot of them, but never been satisfied with the results. They simply don't look comic book enough for me. So, I've developed my own ultra-secret technique which someday is going to make me a lot of money (yeah, sure): Remember, you saw it here first, folks. The MadDog Comic Book Generator. Just set up your story board, take your shots in the studio or wherever you like, pay me a lot of money for my secrets and do what I tell you and voilà - you're a comic book baron.

Look out, DC Comics. Here I come!

Spreading the contrast

The next improvement will be to distribute the "amount of contrast" more evenly among the lightness values. That is, we don't want too much differenence betwen the adjacent lightness values in the mid-range, as well as in the bottom part of the scale, except for a few values at the very bottom, where we do not percieve contrast very well, anyway.

To normalise this picture, the gamma curve must be made steeper in the dark range (at the cost of losing some of the contrast in the bright part of the range). Linearising the dark part of the curve serves to minimise the damage to contrast in te bright areas that would be brought about by the overall steepening of the curve. The smaller the extent of linearity, the steeper will be the linear part of the curve and more of the dark values will become visible. Dialing the gamma value down from 0.45 to 0.42 takes care of the overall contrast; reducing the extent of linearity from 0.1 to 0.04 lightens the shadows to an acceptable level. Getting at the best pair of numbers may be an iterative process: adjust the gamma, then linearity; try another gamma and adjust the linearity parameter to suit. If you cannot achieve the desired effect in, say, 3-4 iterations, it probably means the picture is bad enough to be discarded.

Now, it can be argued that doing so is warping the truth (and it is, in the literal sense of the word). The resulting image will look very differently in comparison to the original scene. Whether you want to do that or not, depends on your goal. If you want a faithful reproduction of the overal scene, stick to the standard gamma curve for the camera. On the other hand, if the purpose is to render the details of an object in the best possible way, uisng whatever light is available at the scene, then a lot of tweaking will be in order, because the outside lighting conditions are almost never good for that purpose.

The result in this case is a fair preservation of detail. Note that the new gamma curve has pulled some of the pixes that would have been underexposed away from zero (not that there were too many). The new underexposed fraction is 0.04% &almost; nothing.

Saturation

This gives me a satisfactory material to feed intto Hugin for panorama assembly (and it will do further adjustsments of its own). This is also how I would treat the regular single-frame pictures. The only other adjustment that I make at this stages is saturation. The best amount of saturation adjustment varies with the camera; I figured that my Fuji S9000 needs a factor of 1.2 to make things look right.

That is not always so. Some pictures need significantly more saturation; some less. For example, this picture looked awful until I desaturated it to 0.8. But in this case, 1.2 seems to work best (this screen shown shows the image before the saturation adjustment was applied).

The cameras do their own saturation adjustment when they save a compressed image; more often than not, their choice of the adjustment factor is awful. The technology strives to please the average consumer, who prefers cartoon-like coloring of his pictures.

Writing it down

Now that I have figured out the adjustments to make for each frame, I write them down in the form of make targets. The command lines involved are too cumbersome to type, so I write them once in the projects Makefile, then replicate as necessary. For this picture, the rule is:

This rule will run ufraw on the raw file (080427_195321.RAF) and store the output in aonach_dubh-f6.tiff. Additionally, it will run exiftool to copy the tags from the raw file into the resulting TIFF file (ufraw does not seem to do that with TIFF). Of particular interest at this stage are the lens tags, which will allow Hugin to calculate the field of view for each frame, but I copy all tags for simplicity.

One thing I suggested for my birthday art project was that people could make some kind of drawing or collage showing what my life will be like as I finally succumb to adulthood. So, my friend Matt made this collage/cartoon. Now, what I initially liked about it was that all of those seem like things that I would actually probably do! Looking at it again later, I am also amused that it seems that I won't actually be an adult for another 10 years. And even then, it's questionable. Haha!

This was taken on Panepistimiou Avenue, one of the main streets in the center of Athens. It was right in front of the National Library, and just a couple blocks from the hotel where I stayed.

I had just missed one of the open-air buses that takes tourists like me around the city, and I had half an hour until the next one arrived. So I sat on one of the steps and photographed people as they walked by me, just to get a sense of what "ordinary" Athens people look like ...

And among the "ordinary" people walking along the street, you'll occasionally see priests like this one. I photographed two or three of them, and was intrigued that most of them had bushy white beards...

When we hear the phrase “first impression,” we tend to think of a person. Was the politician I recently voted for as inspiring when I heard his first speech as he was years later? (More so, sadly.) Was the girl that I married as beautiful at 13 as she was years later, in her twenties and thirties? (Yes, and yes.) Did Bob Dylan’s Blowin’ in the Wind send more of a shiver down my spine in 1963 than it did when I heard it drifting from a car radio 45 years later? (No. It stops me dead in my tracks every time I hear it.)

It’s not just people that make first impressions on me. Cities do, too, perhaps because I encountered so many of them while my family moved every year throughout my childhood. Or perhaps it’s because, after seeing so many cities that I thought were different in the United States, I was so completely unprepared for the wild variety of sights and sounds and smells that I encountered as a grown man, when I traveled to Europe and South America, to Africa and Asia and Australia. And even today, there are cities that I’m visiting for the first time, and which continue to take me by surprise.

Athens is one of those cities. I don’t know what I was expecting… Something old, of course, something downright ancient, filled with smashed statues and marble columns like Rome, engraved with unreadable inscriptions in a language I never learned — but probably not as ancient as Cairo. I also didn’t expect the graffiti that covered nearly every wall, on every building, up and down every street. They were mostly slogans and phrases in Greek (and therefore completely unintelligible to me), but with occasional crude references in English to IMF bankers, undercover policemen, a politician or two, and the CIA. There were a couple slogans from the Russian revolution of 1917, from the Castro uprising in Cuba, and even from the American revolution (“united we stand, divided we fall.”)

Naturally, I thought all of this had come about in just the past few months, as Greece has wrestled with its overwhelming financial crisis. But I was told by local citizens that much of the graffiti has been around for quite a bit longer than that – just as it has been in cities like New York and London. Some of it was wild and colorful, with cartoon figures and crazy faces … though I don’t think it quite rises to the level of “street art” that one sees in parts of SoHo, Tribeca, and the East Village in New York. What impressed me most about the graffiti in Athens was its vibrant energy; I felt like the artists were ready to punch a hole through the walls with their spray-cans.

These are merely my own first impressions; they won’t be the same as yours. Beyond that, there are a lot of facts, figures, and details if one wants to fully describe a city like Athens. Its recorded history spans some 3,400 years, and it includes the exploits of kings and generals, gods and philosophers, athletes and artists. There are statues and columns and ruins everywhere; and towering above it all is the breath-taking Acropolis. It’s far too rich and complex for me to describe here in any reasonable way; if you want to know more, find some books or scan the excellent Wikipedia summary.

It’s also hard to figure out what one should photograph on a first visit to a city like Athens. It’s impossible not to photograph the Acropolis, especially since it’s lit at night and visible from almost every corner of the city. I was interested in the possibility of photographing the complex in the special light before dawn or after sunset, but it’s closed to visitors except during “civilized” daytime hours. It’s also undergoing extensive renovations and repair, so much of it is covered in scaffolding, derricks, and cranes. In the end, I took a few panorama shots and telephoto shots, and explored the details by visiting the new Acropolis Museum, with the camera turned off.

Aside from that, the photos you’ll see here concentrate on two things: my unexpected “first impression” of the local graffiti, and my favorite of all subjects: people. In a couple cases, the subjects are unmistakably Greek – Greek orthodox priests, for example – and in a couple cases, you might think you were looking at a street scene in São Paulo or Mexico City. But in most of the shots, you’ll see examples of stylish, fashionable, interesting people that don’t look all that much different from the people I’ve photographed in New York, London, Rome, or Paris. Maybe we can attribute that to the homogenization of fashion and style in today’s interconnected global environment. Or maybe we can just chalk it up to the fact that people are, well … interesting … wherever you go.

This was taken on Panepistimiou Avenue, one of the main streets in the center of Athens. It was right in front of the National Library, and just a couple blocks from the hotel where I stayed.

I had just missed one of the open-air buses that takes tourists like me around the city, and I had half an hour until the next one arrived. So I sat on one of the steps and photographed people as they walked by me, just to get a sense of what "ordinary" Athens people look like ...

I first noticed this woman sitting alone, holding out a plastic cup and quietly asking passers-by for donations. And then a young boy wandered along the street, stopped in front of her, and plopped himself down on her lap. Note the box of pop-corn that he's holding; I think he had decided to walk down to a food-seller on the corner to get himself some refreshments, before coming back to sit on his mother's lap for the remainder of the morning...

When we hear the phrase “first impression,” we tend to think of a person. Was the politician I recently voted for as inspiring when I heard his first speech as he was years later? (More so, sadly.) Was the girl that I married as beautiful at 13 as she was years later, in her twenties and thirties? (Yes, and yes.) Did Bob Dylan’s Blowin’ in the Wind send more of a shiver down my spine in 1963 than it did when I heard it drifting from a car radio 45 years later? (No. It stops me dead in my tracks every time I hear it.)

It’s not just people that make first impressions on me. Cities do, too, perhaps because I encountered so many of them while my family moved every year throughout my childhood. Or perhaps it’s because, after seeing so many cities that I thought were different in the United States, I was so completely unprepared for the wild variety of sights and sounds and smells that I encountered as a grown man, when I traveled to Europe and South America, to Africa and Asia and Australia. And even today, there are cities that I’m visiting for the first time, and which continue to take me by surprise.

Athens is one of those cities. I don’t know what I was expecting… Something old, of course, something downright ancient, filled with smashed statues and marble columns like Rome, engraved with unreadable inscriptions in a language I never learned — but probably not as ancient as Cairo. I continued the extreme clean-up in my house and it's a great job to do, because I find a lot of forgotten treasures everywhere. Today I found one of my favourite cartoon serie: Axel Moonshine. Science fiction adventures with Axel Moonshine and his friend Musky, written by Christian Godard and draw by Julio Ribera.

This cartoon by Willard Mullin depicts the diminished state of New York baseball after the Dodgers and Giants left town.


The Glory Days: New York Baseball 1947-1957 exhibit ran at the Museum of the City of New York from June 27 to December 31, 2007. The decade between 1947 and 1957 was the golden age of baseball in New York City. With three major league teams—the Yankees, the Brooklyn Dodgers, and the New York Giants—at least one of whom played in the World Series every year except 1948; two National League teams in an intense rivalry each season; and seven landmark subway series, New York was the undisputed baseball capital of the nation. But more than that, New Yorkers lived and experienced baseball in their town in a way never to be repeated again. This exhibit explores how and why New York City came to dominate the sport, how this changed by 1957, and how the events of these eleven seasons shaped today’s game. In addition, the exhibition uses baseball as a lens through which city life in the post-war years is examined, and contextualizes baseball’s dominance in the history of the city.

The Museum of the City of New York (MCNY), founded in 1923 to present the history of New York City and its people, fills an imposing 5-floor brick and limestone building on the Museum Mile section of Fifth Avenue, between 103rd and 104th Streets. The Museum was originally housed in Gracie Mansion until this Neo-Georgian-Colonial style was built to the design of Joseph J. Freedlander from 1928-1930. The museum's collections include paintings, drawings, prints, and photographs featuring New York City and its residents, as well as costumes, decorative objects and furniture, toys, rare books and manuscripts, marine and military collections, police and fire collections, and a theater collection.
